Workshop on Composting

A workshop on the implementation of innovative composting approaches was held in Tskaltubo (Georgia) within the framework of the project BSB00464 “Smart and Innovative Solutions for Green and Clean Rural Areas in the Black Sea Basin” (Smart4Rural).

Representatives from the project partners—Tskaltubo Municipality, Rize Municipality, and the Imereti Scientists’ Union “Spectri”—as well as target groups and stakeholders, participated onsite. In addition, representatives from the Galati Tehnopol Association (Romania), Ungheni City Hall, and the Regional Center of Sustainable Development (Moldova) joined the meeting online.

The Mayor of Tskaltubo, Genadi Balanchivadze, welcomed the participants and emphasized that the project implementation and in particular, the construction of a composting center in Tskaltubo, as part of the Smart4Rural project, represents a significant step toward adopting modern waste management practices in the municipality. He also highlighted the importance of sharing best composting practices to create a green city conception.

A compelling presentation on the composting activities already carried out within the project was delivered by Project Manager Ketevan Tskhakaia and Project Coordinator Maia Panchulidze.

Participants were also introduced to presentations on Waste management policy in Georgia (Tamari Mumladze), the activities and achievements of the Kutaisi Composting Center (Nato Burjaliani), the composting approach used in the training course and its expected outcomes (Tsitsino Turkadze).

Mustafa Baltaci, Project Coordinator and representative of Rize Municipality, shared insights into the recycling and composting experiences in Rize and other municipalities in Türkiye.

The workshop reaffirmed that collaboration and the sharing of experiences are essential for implementing best practices and developing joint educational resources.
